Initial impressions: APR Stage 1, 93 Octane program
RPI called yesterday to have me pick up my snub mount and I did dread this day as I was still undecided between GIAC and APR for chipping.
After much lost sleep last night and reading everything there was in the archives I went and had the APR 93 octane programmed into my Avant.
Reasons:
1) I chose 93 over the 91 program as I'll be driving withing distance of a Chevron that carries 94 octane at home. If I run low in the US where it is not to be found I can always go back to stock and with the planned AWE exhaust it'll give me a bit of low end umph I need.
2) The ability to switch programs without a dedicated controller. Being able to turn the car off, swtich back and forth was a deciding factor for me. I snowboard a lot and I'm absent minded at times. The thought of putting in a chip program and then not being able switch to stock or a lower mode if the proper gas was not available while out at a ski resort wasn't a situation I was looking forward to.
3) Cost. The APR solution (stock and 93) was less than the GIAC program with added stock program and switching controller.
My thoughts:
Warren at RPI was very friendly and showed me the near idiot proof ECMS switching mechanism. I had preloaded 94 octane in the tank and there was no other things I needed to know so off I went for a drive.
The car pulls like crazy now in 1st and 2nd gear. I also noticed that the RPM hits 5000 faster than in stock mode in all gears and the turbo whistles much longer than before when spooling up.
Just to confirm my thoughts I turned off the 93 program and floored it in 1st and 2nd to see just how long it took to reach 5000 RPM and 100kph.
When I swapped back to chip mode I reconfirmed my findings... the chip works and the car now flies as it should have.
On the straight run the car pulls from 1st and keeps on pulling until I backed off in 4th gear at 170kph.
The delivery of pwer is smooth. No surges at any point in the RPM band with any gear. I do not notice any shaking others have mentioned when they had their car chipped.
I was sitting on the fence for the longest time and I am happy with my decision. I'll post a followup at the end of the month to see if any strange behaviour comes up.
