did you have dual ic's installed for the dyno run?

Default Not true Jet, a well designed FMIC is better all around especially for a K03...

which gets heatsoaked much quicker than a bigger turbo. My K03 glows after 1 hard run, my T28 rarely glowed the entire time I had it. I've had both IC setups and the FMIC was much more efficient than these particular OEM Duals. I ran tests on both, FMIC did not get heat soaked like the duals. I agree that it better be well designed, I have the OCT and it's worth the extra $. What kind of issues are you referring too with regard to the FMIC? If you don't like the looks that's another issue, I know sometimes they're a real eye soar.

Default Nice, I was thinking about doing this as well...

Didn't you have this setup on your blue car? What kind of temp reduction did you get? I think I may do this with my FMIC, good work.

Default C'mon, even a racer like Hoppen rejected the FMIC. Don't make me pull the quotes again. :)

Besides it runs into all those flow issues blocking off the radiator. Well designed dual SMIC's (read wind tunnel testing and research - how many aftermarket FMIC "designers" do any of that) flow better than your typical radiator or bumper blocked FMIC (especially with the wheel liners opened up). Jet's right: until you go bigger than the K03 or K04 (or above 400 HP as Hoppen's research showed - but then he is biased because he wants to win races) the FMIC is useless overkill regardless of what some individual butt dyno says.

(This is where FMIC folks pull up those JC Whitney numbers)

Default LOL, did Hoppen do tests on the A4?

My intake temps are higher now with the K03 then they ever were with the T28. Proving that a FMIC is even more essential with a smaller turbo to help keep temps down. The only reason I know this because I've had both setups. Otherwise I wouldn't be as confident about which is better. ; )

There's no way that those little, plastic end tank OEM IC's are gonna outperform a well designed FMIC. If you want a Dual vs. FMIC setup, then compare a good FMIC with the S4/RS4/6 Dual setups, other than that, there's no argument which is setup is more effiecient on the A4. Post away my friend!!! : ) Hey we still gotta do another dyno day!

Default No, Hoppen used the best of the best and still choose the duals. :)

Given how much more efficient the T28 is, how could your normal driving temps be anything but lower? The K03 is going to run hotter, no dispute. Even my BEX K03+ runs cooler. Again no dispute that either an FMIC or dual SMIC is essential with our smaller turbos to keep temps down. I already know which is better so I don't have to waste time and money on a solution I'm going to regret and rip out for what I already have.

"...a well designed FMIC setup." Now, there's the real question. You've already seen the cram 'em behind the bumper solutions. Then there's the internal design questions, front surface area, end tank flow, diverters, turbulators, etc. (plumbing is pretty much a minor issue as the cores have a far greater impact on flow). It's not a question of "outperforming" it's a question of overkill. There will be NO appreciable, measureable difference between a "well designed" FMIC and the duals. If anything the improved, ducted, nonblocked flow of the wind-tunnel tested duals is going to be better - even with plastic end tanks (which are more than adequate for the HP and boost the 1.8T is ever likely to see - even moderately tweaked up). You don't have to go with an S4/RS4/6 setup to get all the benefits for a 1.8T dual SMIC under 400 HP the same way you don't have to upgrade the radiator either.

So, which aftermarket slap-it-in, mark-it-up tuner is doing windtunnel analysis? At least you didn't reference anymore of those JC Whitney type, single SMIC versus FMIC charts.

Audi and Joe Hoppen made the right decision after exhaustive testing. Tuners can't and don't invest as much time or money and need a simplistic, slap it into place "solution."

Yeah, we still gotta do another dyno day! Maybe this summer when the temps are all up. My wife's car is still stock (covers face in embarrassment) so it'd be a good control. But we have to get a more diverse range of cars than last time. Not enough baseline data. Strange thing on my runs is later pulls show more HP and torque. Must be the dual SMIC's.

Default I'm not an expert so I don't claim to have all the answers...

But after asking around a lot before doing the move to the dual set up and talking to guys on the S4 forum and people that race cars, it basically came down to this. People were worried with the dual set up of turbo lag and the extra plumbing affecting performance and so on. I was told by people that were more knowledgeable than me that unless you go to a big turbo kit the dual set up would be fine. They said that all the concerns about turbo lag and performance were not limited to the dual set up that a FMIC could if not well designed to work with the proper application have the same problems. Also there is the radiator issue to deal with, which can be a problem, finally there is also the fitting on the car and look issue. Most of the serious modded S4s went to the RS 4 dual set up instead of a front mount and I talked to a guy in California that said he could have gone a good FMIC for is modified S4 but the cost of the unit even at the price he was going to pay was not worth the small gain over the dual set up.
In the S4 shoot out last fall in European car, I believe there was only one S4 with a FMIC and in the heat wave they tested in on the track it was the only car that had overheating problems.

Not the heat soak only occurs when standing still with no air flow going through the I/C(s) and even a FMIC could have the problem although at a lesser level. I don't think the kind of turbo you run will have much to do with heat soaking especially if you are at idle.

Now the T28 does not glow as much as the K03 and K04 because it most likely does not spin at 175,000 Rpms and thus generates less heat. Because of their very small size to reduce turbo lag they spin at an incredible speed to move the air and thus work harder and create more heat. This is the way they were designed.

Every design as its strong and weak points but since Audi designed, tested and installed the dual set up on a version of the B6 1.8T in Europe it can not be that bad. All parts are OEM and fit without any problems and the looks of the car is not affected. This to me is a bonus. If I ever go to a much higher level of engine mod and a FMIC is said to be tested and required for this mod then I will do it. Until then I will stay with the dual set up and use my water mister to compensate some of the few pitfalls that come with it.

Default Jet, have you seen this "enhanced" left side IC...

...even has the port for the boost sensor. Just might end the whole issue.
