External appearance is never an indicator. We had an incredibly good looking 70K mile J30 traded in. When we changed the oil, the filter was factory original with no paper element left in the cannister. The oil came out in chunks - both paper and sludge. I'm sure it was just topped off all of its life.
People buy a Toyota expecting reliability. Maybe they see this a licsense to skimp on service ? When I worked at the British car repair shop, Rolls owners wer the cheapest - most stated that because they had spent so much for the car ( and they belived the 70 year old hype that Rolls made the best cars in the world ), they felt they didn't need to spend any more money.

A few years ago he started to see failed engines that had so much unbelievable sludge in the oil pans he started to ask the owners what oil they were using.....Quaker State was the worse offender! The Valvoline, Castro, Pennsoil had no sludge. Now this was a few years ago so I won't knock Quaker State, and they now own Pennsoil so who knows what formula they are using. Just some food for thought on the sludge issue!
