Default Isn't the gas mileage of the A4 3.0 model pretty lousy?

I know quattro exacts a penalty in gas mileage, but nevertheless 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (EPA figures for 6-speed stick) is pretty poor for the size of the car and its engine. For comparison, the BMW 330i gets 21/30 and the 330xi gets 20/27. Even the AWD Jaguar X-Type 3.0 gets better mileage at 18/28.

When I was in the Audi showroom last time, they had an A8 L 4.2 with the window sticker showing 17 city/25 highway. These are the same exact figures an A4 3.0 quattro tiptronic gets. How is it that the A8 L with a much larger V8 engine and an extra 450 pounds of weight gets the same gas mileage as the V6 A4?

Default It could be better but it's nothing that a chip can't cure. ;-)

When I chipped my VR6 I saw a 1.5 - 2 mpg increase.

Highway mileage is 2 mpg less than my '98 2.8 quattro avant. Not progress. Bring us the TDI's!

Of course you will do better after break-in. Got 28.3m/g going to The City and back in 1.8t. 23.5adv

I can tell you my 330Ci has never seen 21 in the city. Try 14-17 mpg.

Default yes...compared to other cars in this market segment...it's at or near the bottom:

bmw 330xi - 20/27 (330i gets 21/30)
lexus is300 - 18/25
merc c320 - 19/25
saab 9-5se - 19/26
volvo s60 AWD - 21/28
acura tl type s - 19/29
jaguar x-type (v6) - 18/28

all figures for manual tranny when possible. sources: edmunds.com & acura.com.

my aunt's 1997 M3 gets better mileage than my car. {sigh}...I was hoping for better mileage numbers from the new v-6, but at least the car has a bigger gas tank.

I think it is because the car is too damn heavy. That and Quattro.
