I had a 01 GTI GLX and I traded it last month for my A4. The VW gives you a lot for your money. The car had leather, VR6, wood trim, rain sensitive wipers, and steering wheel stereo controls. My Audi doesn't have these options. Unfortunately the GTI build quality sucked. The car rattled and squeaked. My heated seats broke, MAFS went, 02 sensors went, and windor reg problem all in 1 year of ownership. The suspension on the VW is real soft. I had to go aftermarket which improved handling but made too much road noise. I am glad I got the Audi even if it is a little underpowered. I am getting chipped on Friday so that should change my perspective. Rumors are that the MKV GTI may have an optional 3.2L 230hp VR6. In Europe you can get 4-Motion on the Bora (jetta) and Golf GTI which is supposedly the same as Audi's quattro.

I miss the rain sensitive wipers in my A4, though I do have everything else (I just couldn't give it all up
. The sport suspension on the A4 is lightyears ahead of my old GTI's in terms of performance while maintaining ride comfort.
Just FYI, the 4Motion in the Golf/Jetta is Haldex, like in the TT, instead of Torsen, like in our cars.

The Haldex system uses a clutch to transfer power to the rear wheels *when necessary* while the Torsen system always distributes power to both the front and rear wheels. So, while Torsen-based all wheel drive is fully mechanical and proactive to wheel slip, Haldex-based all wheel drive is part-electronis and reactive to wheel slip (someone here said it reacts within 15 degrees of wheel slip - not bad). Torsen is generally considered the better all wheel drive system (at least on here
.
The smaller platform VWs/Audis (TT, Golf, Jetta) use Haldex because the engine is mounted tranversely, which I guess doesn't leave much room for the necessary transmission mechanics for Torsen.
