i know the tiptronic is slow, but how reliable is it? is it strong, enough to take beatings and last long as the engine (more specifically 1.8t) or is the tiptronic tranny something that is vulnerable?
anyone on the forum ever have to replace the transmission?

i have snub mount which helps move torque around, and therefore I bleieve it goes back to tranny as well...not so good.
I high rev constantly, and do city driving in DC everyday, and stop and go traffic to get to DC for 60 some odd miles.....
I have been chipped since 1000 miles, and have hit the 55000 tonight actually...
They say the Tip tranny can blow with too much torque, and I am certainly putting a lot of torque on this tranny...
For the last 5000 miles or so, I have been noticing a ridiculous annoying (not not whiplash making) jerk at about 15 mph coming to a stop at a red light. This happens in both S and D, I drive S most often. It doesnt happen all the time, maybe once a day.
I have been getting the feeling that the tranny is going to go soon. BUT - BUT...I VAG the car all the time. I specifically do the tranny faults, and low and behold, NO FAULTS EVER. And and touchy as our car's fault coding system is, for there to not be any codes thus far, and the aggressive driving I do in the conditions I drive DAILY, this thing CAN take a beating. at least for 54,000 miles.
I also have a Borla exhaust, which puts a LITTLE more torque for me.
However, it is my fear of pressing my luck that I have yet to get an FMIC or T28 or something.
Also, I have yet to hear of anyone in here replacing a tip tranny. But I rarely hear of people with torquey mods with a Tip.
If you do not plan on modding, then you will be JUST FINE. Unless, by some freaky chance you get a lemon.

I've been running the Wetterauer chip for my 3.0 for a year now (and around 33,000 miles). The tranny (and engine) have been performing perfectly.
With the chip, I'm putting around 241 ft/lb torque at the crank. I've had it on the track for two days in June with excellent results.
I'm probably at or slightly over the top end of the safety limit for the tranny. If you're running with 250+ ft/lb torque, then you do run the chance that some tranny damage could occur.
It's the price you pay to get more performance out of OEM parts. =)
