from a normal FWD or RWD setup loss of around 15-20% to about 30-35%.
Don't get me wrong, I have quattro and love it, but it is something that has to be taken into consideration if you're talking about performance. Audi's stance has always been that the extra drivetrain loss from the AWD is made up for by the additional traction given off the line.

if we are talking about speed (and I think we are since this started as a post about drag racing), all that matters is 0-60mph. Who cares about drivetrain losses if it only results in a loss of .1 second off the line?
Anyway, it doesn't matter. Either way, the A4 1.8T is not a fast car. Sitting around and debating whether 7.8 seconds is better than 7.9 seconds is stupid. Neither time is anything to brag about. It's like if I got a D on my math test and you got a D+ and we sit around and argue about who did better. Dumb thing to dispute since both scores suck.
Which brings me back to my main point.... The A4 is not a race car. Let's face it, it's slow for a $30,000+ car. It was hard for me to come to grips with the fact that my A4 is almost as slow from 0-60 as my old 1999 Altima. But I am okay with it now because the A4 outshines other more expensive cars in so many other ways.

The A4 is not slow! Yes, it does require revving up the engine to get a decent launch. But, the sweet spot is in the 3000-5000 rpm range and that's where I like to keep it. Even though turbo lag prevents winning too many light to light jousts, the turbo effect is what I like most about the 1.8T. Also, my car is chipped, and very few non-sports cars can keep up with me in the twisties or at full boost. You're right, I don't want a Mustang or a Camaro, so I don't try to race them. But, it sure is funny how many challenge me as they see me enjoying my car on Houston roads.

Of course, I was speeking of 0-60 times which is what most people seem to favor as a measure of speed. Even then, I exagerated a little in calling it slow. The 1.8T is what I call "quick" but not "fast" like most of the cars people attempt to race.
However, since owning a 1.8T, I realize there is so much more to speed that just 0-60 times. Like you said, this car is fast when it's in the "power band."
I still believe that Quattro is a non-factor as it relates to speed whether we are talking 0-60 or 60-100.
I also believe that if we want our cars to look good, we should focus on it's strengths. Drag racing is not one of it's strengths, IMHO. There will always be lots of less expensive cars that can beat the A4 in a drag race.

I tried this once, and it seems to get rid of most of the lag... I know its faster in the D mode, but I often shift it to the sport mode for racing ppl....

The revs can hang a bit so what about putting it in neutral, revving to 3 or 4 K, shifting to D with the brakes on and then punching it.
