Default lag between 3,000 - 4,000 rpms

Hello All -

I have a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro with tiptronic transmission. I currently have close to 1,000 miles (purchased 2 weeks ago) and I have this strange sound/lag/stutter coming between 3 and 4K rpms.

The lower gears, 2 & 3 are very pronounced, where 4th is still there yet less and 5th, well...I was too busy holding on at that point! (ha-ha).

Let me explain the sound/lag/stutter.

In 2nd, 3rd, 4th (all tip mode), between 3500 and 4000 rpms IF I am about 1/4 throttle and constantly accelerating I hear a "sputter" or what I originally thought was a misfire between those rpms. It sounds exactly like taking your foot off the throttle at those rpms, BUT I am on throttle and gradually increasing input.

This does NOT happen when I am full throttle moving through those gears/rpms and it does not seem to effect power when I do get this stutter...it just sounds "wrong" and almost like the engine note is weezing or gasping for air.

Once past 4K rpms with the same 1/4 or so throttle, there is no sputter anywhere up to 6K. Also, if I am highway driving and have the car in 4th around 3500 - 4000 I can actually reproduce it and it will keep "sputtering" as long as I keep it varying in that rpm range.

Once again, no perceived loss of power...no sputter when I am WOT...so what is this and most importantly...Does my engine/exhaust/tranny have a problem?!?

I appreciate any and all input and any experience others are having.

Thanks!!

Default I think our engines switch to a second set of intake runners at or around those rpms...

which could be what you're feeling. It shouldn't be too pronounced, however, so you may want to have the car looked at by the dealer.

I could feel this happening on my '98 2.8 (same design), but not so much on my 3.0.
