The US two major parties are so close on policy issues, we "foreigners" can't tell them apart.
Having one slightly right-of-centre and one mostly right-of-centre party to choose from every election must get a bit redundant.

If you look at the extremes:
The extreme left Democrat would have the government taking care of all the people in a manner that would leave everyone socially and econically equal.
The extreme right Republican would choose to have virtually no government control with every citizen's life defined by what each individual makes of it.
Your perceptions are most likely defined by what your news organizations would choose to have you believe (through emphasis and de-emphasis of available information as it is in about any free press society). In reality though, most of us in the U.S. would like to see a balance of the two and thus tend to vote with a leaning that is either slightly left or right of center.
For instance, the left wing Democrat would choose to have socialized medicine where everyone receives equal medical care. The right wing Republican would believe that the higher taxes and resultant beuracracy required for socialized medicine would just mean more government control with its resultant mediocrity.
