Looking at subs....STFA (lots of mixed ideas). Can someone point me in the direction of some good

Well I have some experience in this and here's my two cents...

I currently have two 10 inch alpine subs (type-r) and love them. I listen to mostly techno, alternative and freestyle music and think they are perfect for any music with tight bass notes. In my Jetta I had two solobaric L7's and they freakin rocked. back then i listened to mostly hip-hop, reggae and other genres with requiring low bass, so they were perfect for that. In any case any sub you choose will require a ton of power to perform well and my weapons of choice in that category would be rockford fosgate or kicker. They both seem to drastically under-rate their power output. hope that helped.

Image Dynamics, DLS, JL W7 or W6V2. OZ audio. depends on your taste
in music. One very important aspect is enclosure design, you could get the best sub with the worst enclosure and still end up with poop

to get rid of that delay he needs to add power
when I had my solobarics. I hade two rockford fosgat amps feeding over 550watts RMS to "each" sub. The delay was kept to a minimal. I do notice some delay in my 10's when listening to techno but again its because under my current configuration, my subs are underpowered. I will probably be doing some custom work over the winter so I'll probably add another amp at that point.

I dunno about underpowered...
I think he's using a 700 or 800 watt Xplod amp powering his 2x10" xplod subs.
I wouldn't ever get anything with that much power because I'd never use it wouldn't sound great, IMO, without upgrading all of the other speakers.
I'm looking for one 10" sub with a 250ish watt amp. Which is more than enough for what I need it for. I don't want a system that can be heard from down the block, I just want the bass frequencies that aren't represented by my 8inch sub to come out, and for the bass to have the capability to be 25-30% louder than it is now.

Re: It all depends on setup...
A small sealed box produces tight bass, where as a ported box of the same dimension will give you a bit more range, but a 'looser' bass ( I believe this type of encloser gives the delay type of base). I personally prefer sealed enclosers, subs around 10-12" range. A good intro level sub are the pioneers. I would definitely invest in a good mono amp, something like a fosgate in the range of 600-1000 watts.
That'll get you thumpin'
