Default Lost power while driving

I have a 2004 A4, 3.0L V6, quattro with around 115,000.
I was driving down the highway on Friday and my car just decided it didn't want to go any further. It acted like it was out of fuel, but, there was over half a tank and the gas gauge is working fine. Tried to restart it, but, no luck. It turned over fine (New Battery) and there was no change in the sound of the car when turning over. There were no warnings and no sensors went off in the warning centre. I pushed the diagnostic button and it doesn't detect any problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Default first steps...

If you have access to VAGCOM, I'd see if you're getting any codes.

Then, I'd check for fuel at the rail:

- Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key? Fuses all intact?
- Have you pulled a plug after cranking to check for unburned fuel/fuel smell?

If that all seems to be working:

- Check for spark at plug(s)? Coil packs in good shape?

Finally, would be odd to die on the highway, but could be a sensor? I know on the 1.8t the Crank Position Sensor will cause the car to die and not start in some cases.

You would be correct! Got word from my mechanic a few days ago. I also had a problem with a sensor wire getting melted on something. Had them both replaced with a new fuel filter for $1000 labour and tax in.

Thanks for your feedback. I've just rolled over a 100,000 km's and anticipate a few more issues coming up, so I may keep your info handy if you don't mind.

Might also be a good idea to replace the fuel filter if you haven't already a clogged filter will cause pre-mature failure of the pump!

Glad to hear that, however the price charged seems high. I see new VDO pumps for your car from about $156.

1000 is way too much for the fuel pump. Mechanic shop typically charges around 500 for that and if you got a buddy that works on cars they'd charge 100 plus parts.

$1000 would be a lot just for a fuel pump. I paid $1000 for a fuel pump, new OEM fuel filter, sensor, and labour, tax in.
