Loud rattling noise during idle after startup.....any ideaS?

Probably the engine lifters. Do a search it's fairly common on Audi A4's
The engine lifters tend to make more noise when engine is cold. Once engine is warmed up and lubricated, the noise should go away.

Re: Loud rattling noise during idle after startup.....any ideaS?
My 1998 A4 3.0 wagon just started making a horrible loud rattling at idle as well. It
disappears when the transmission is engaged but grinds like fury in park or neutral. Our
mechanic is still trying to diagnose it (naturally it stopped today while at the mechanic.) Worst at a cold start.
If you have figured it out I'd be happy to learn what it was!

rattling noise on idle DSG audi
hi,
kinda new to whole the forum thing, so please forgive for daft @rse questions imay ask.
i have and audi 2.0 TDi DSG on an 05 plate. i have noticed this rattling noise coming fro the front of my car underneath kinda down by the lower right of my car if your facing the front end. (passenger side wheel)
it sound like an empty tin can with a few stones rattling round, on start up it stops an starts but as the car gets warmer its gets worse and worse.
i have serviced the car, cam belt tensioner pulley the full lot bar the water pump which i know i should have done (sorry) i fear that noise is either my dsg box or flywheel!? so different people keep elling me.
any help or advise please people?
cheers
Geoff.

Way to bump the deep space thread...at least no one can say you didn't search!
Anyway - my gf's a4 is a B5, but it had a similar rattle to the one you described. I couldn't find it until I jacked the car, got under it, and noticed that the metal bracket around the front motor mount had worked lose. Tightened it down and it went away.
Since you did the timing belt...maybe the plate is lose. Just tighten the bolt if that's it.
