Default Stampchez is quite right- M3s DO NOT have active suspension. Period. What you probably felt was the

variable power assist, which I believe firms up the steering when in sport mode.

And in case you're still not convinced, this is from BMWusa.com:

M3 suspension:
-Independent suspension with M calibration (stiffened dampers, springs and anti-roll bars; modified rear axle geometry)
-Gas-pressurized front struts and rear shock absorbers

I know that when I pushed the sport button in the z4 3.0 i was driving, the steering was tighter. You could also feel the back end sit lower when you pressed the sport button. It might be different in the M3.
