A Fort Worth father of six who had just married his longtime sweetheart was killed early Saturday when he stuck his head of out a pickup truck window and hit a sign pole, police and the driver of the pickup said.
The passenger, Shawn Garrison, 26, died from head injuries suffered when he struck the sign, the Tarrant County medical examiner ruled.
A woman told police that Mr. Garrison had been hanging his head out the window around 1 a.m. in the 4300 block of Panola Avenue, near Lancaster Avenue at Oakland Boulevard in East Fort Worth.
The driver, Kenneth Turnbull Jr., said Saturday night that a car had cut in front of him, forcing him to swerve and hop a curb, when Mr. Garrison struck a speed-limit sign.
Mr. Turnbull, 26, said his longtime friend was always looking out for others.
"He was a good guy, friends with everybody. He'd give you the shirt off his back," he said. "He liked helping people. He'd see the homeless people, and he'd go to McDonald's and buy about 20 burgers and take it down to the homeless people."
Mr. Turnbull said Mr. Garrison was a house painter who had five boys and one girl, ages 2 to 10. He said the family would often go fishing or hunting together.
Mr. Garrison had been dating his wife for 11 years before getting married to her this July, Mr. Turnbull said. The pair went to Hawaii on their honeymoon.
