Default 12 pt sockets are actually less prone to rounding the bolts/nuts

6 point are stonger. For most application it doesnt matter, but 12 point are usually the better choice for hand tools.

That said, for wheels, I use a 17mm 6pt deep impact socket, but not on a gun.

Default i was thinking

they are not studs

they are not nuts

They are called bolts

you are an idiot

All would apply. Air tools in the hands of some people really make me shake my head in disbelief. There is no need for a 3/4" drive tool for almost anything on the car. 1" drive? good god. My 1/2" gun is capable of 600ft/lb in reverse, clearly a wheel bolt will never require more than that, or half of that, or a third of that.

OP, for future reference, everything on your Audi is metric. Nothing is SAE. This should help to avoid more confusion down the road.

Default i over tqed my lugs and in a rush used an SAE instead of metric...

OMG im a complete moron? no..i was in a rush and made a mistake. I can admit that, calling me a complete idiot is overkill. I wish i could be so perfect as you all to never make mistakes. My post was simply to laugh that i destroyed a $100 rim and to help those that dont have access to the tools that i do!

Default and as for the bolts/studs deal!

Ever talk with anyone and mention your wheel bolts? Get a nice clueless look usually. I find it easier to refer to them as studs/lugs than to call them bolts...omg im soooo stupid!

Default That's an interesting take on the comedy of errors

It's kind of like saying that "the stock market went down a bit" during the Great Depression.

Default Ok I apologize

I read my post, yes it was rude. My bad.

The use of studs and nuts in place of the proper term bolt is a pet peeve of mine. Just because many people use the wrong term doesnt mean it isnt wrong. But to each his own, Im not your english teacher.

Seriously, air tools are very, very, very powerful. You need to be careful when you use them or you can break or severely damage things in a split second. A 3/4" drive is used for things like crank bolts, axle bolts, etc, not on wheels. I actually find a breaker and pipe to be just as effective as a gun, if a bit less efficient.

And as for the idiot comment. I take it back. You are a genious, a comic genious. I read the post again and got a good laugh out of it, which was the point.

Be more careful next time!
