I was thinking the exact same thing
but it could be the photograph.
on the lower picture (rear shot) the tire does not look like it is sitting perpendicular to the ground but, rather, looks like it is angling inward into the fender well at the top of the tire.
This set up would dramatically effect tire wear.

Nah, it's the shot. Those spacers have been on since earlier Oct 03 with no wear to tires.
Over that length of time given the distance the car has gone, I would have seen serious tread wear.
