Default Multifunction Steering Wheel Hookup Question

If you have the 3 spoke can you add the Multifunction? Are the radio hookup's already there for the new wheel?

If it is I seems like we could add something to the 3-spoke wheel for the controls.

Default You'll need the electronics out of a multifunction wheel...

...it's microprocessor controlled and uses a proprietary protocol to communicate by a single wire to the J527 control unit which then recodes the signals for the CAN bus to the radio. You'd have to swap in the multifunction controller and then rig the switches to the steering wheel (all the necessary wiring is otherwise there). The wheel new is ~$500 and if you go there you'd also have to get a new airbag for ~$700. Add labor and the usual 'nobody said I needed one of those' unexpected parts, etc.

The 2002 Bentley is pretty sparse on details. The earlier wiring diagrams are much better.

Default so when you buy a new wheel, it doesn't come w/an airbag?

that's like buying a replacement sunroof and having to get the glass separatley no?

Default But why pay for something you don't need? A steering wheel's controls can fail but still have a (m)

good airbag, and vice versa. Just like dealers sometimes have to replace sunroof glass, but don't need the other parts like the rails, motor, etc.

Audi/VW is actually really good about their individual parts identification, in my opinion. When the dealers look up a part, the computer system is very good about showing related parts and part diagrams to show what may or may not be needed.

Default I see, so why would I have to buy the airbag right?

I only want the multifunction wheel, I already have the airbag.

Default If you're just using the electronics out of it and they don't require you to purchase the airbag,(m)

then you shouldn't. You may need the airbag if you were actually going to replace your 3-spoke with a multifunction wheel, as the airbags may be shaped or designed differently though.

Default Right, if you're kludging, you just need the electronics and not the...

...air bag. However, you can't buy the electronics separately. You have to buy the whole steering wheel (unless you score a junk yard find). You will need to figure out how to mount the switches in a new location and that may not be pretty. Otherwise, for the stock look, you'll have to get the whole wheel and airbag combo.

This project might be more interesting just as a way to find out how to send commands over the CAN bus.

Default Agreed :) It would be great to be able to do an aftermarket style remote control to interface (m)

directly into the CAN bus. Ah well.. Dream on, eh?
