I dropped my 3.0 off at the dealer yesterday. There was no CEL but it sounded awful and it wasn't the normal valve noise you can hear on start up. It was a metallic rattling coming from the front driver side of the motor. It almost sounded like the timing chain smacking something every couple of seconds or so. Almost like a rotating loose chain does. The car idled fine but the throttle was very jerky only some of the time. Any ideas on what it might be?

I had the cam chain tensioner replaced on my VW 1.8T. It resonated at about 1800 rpm. I'm not sure is there is a similar setup in the 3.0.

That would be my guess too.

I believe the 3.0L engine is chain driven.

I did a search and if it is the cam chain tensioner I would be the third person in about three weeks on AW to have this failure.

would make metallic rattle sound when just letting off the throttle when going slower (say in a parking lot).

Took dealer a test drive or two to figure it out. They had to have the car all day to replace it since they have to rip apart the engine I guess.
