Default My battery just blew up...

WTF? 02 1.8, 91K miles, borla exhaust, stage 1+, 225 tt injectors. I turned the ignition and it made a loud POP and then all this smoke came out from under the hood. The battery leaked all it's healthy juices on the undercarriage and the battery itself is in pieces. what would cause this? I have done no other electrical mods.

Default batteries do this from time to time, supposedly charging a drained battery gives off a lot of gasses

Was the vent hooked up correctly? Not really an Audi or mod issue, I've seen another A4 with a blown-up battery before but I see 4-8 Audi's a day.

Default it's the original battery as far as I know...

I am the second owner, and I have never had to jump the car. I was driving fast (110 very safely!) on the highway for a minute, then let the car cool down. Went into the store, came out and that happened. My problem is I'm supposed to drive from Cleveland to NYC tomorrow morning. If I put a new battery in it, will it be OK??

Default Well you would want to clean & neutralize the mess & I'd get electrical system checked out

for your own benefit, but generally speaking you shoud be OK replacing the battery. Make shure the vent tube is attached on the drivers side of the battery & the plug is placed in the pass side, this is if you use the Audi battery or equivalent.

Default I poured a whole box of baking soda mixed with water in batches...

I sprayed out the battery compartment with the soda water and under-carriage. I am going to buy a new battery tomorrow and hope my car doesn't break down on the drive to NYC. Wish me luck. The vent tube thing was connected, I don't know why this happened... the car is six years old, but I take care of her.

Default if it is the original battery that is a long time, may have been drawing down & needing

excessive recharging from the alternator resulting in a large amount of gasses, good luck & you should be fine.

Default The cause is usually low electrolyte level in one of the cells, with exposed ...

battery plates. When you turned on the ignition and tried to crank the engine, the current caused a spark between a couple of the exposed plates and ignited the hydrogen gas in the cell.
