My Gas Tank Won't Fill!!!
My gas tank won't fill up all the way. It stops at about 9 gallons. I am almost positive the gauge is not broke. I think it might be the float inside the tank, but when I talked to a mechanic he told me it would be 5 hours of labor and $400 to fix just for labor. Any ideas that are quick and less expensive?? Its a pain, I am always at the gas station. Its an 03 A4 1.8. Thanks

When the gas nozzle clicks, pull it out and listen if you hear some air hissing out...
I had that happen a few years ago. When you let the air out, you can fill it a bit more and then the nozzle clicks again. In my case, it had something to do with the evap canister or something like that and it ended up costing me more than 1K if I remember well (this is before I finally learned how to do most repairs myself).

Try a pen, but be careful.
It could just be gas lock in the fuel neck. I had this happen a couple of times. (I noticed it was at times when the weather had changed rapidly.)
To solve the gas-lock, I just used a pen to hold open the sliding metal hatch at the throat of the filler tube. You can hear the gas escapement. Should work fine. Of course, be extra careful about sparks - so leave your cell phone and other electronics in the cabin when you do this.
It could of course be the evap cannister itself. I had the evap get plugged in my old Saab. It was surprisingly expensive to fix - not as bad as xlrider, but I recall a few hundred dollars.

Do you mean syphon? There's no movement of fuel by the suction jet arrangement when the fuel pump is off, and that doesn't matter anyway. The tank is designed so that once the fuel in the filler-side rises high enough, the fuel will then flow into the passenger side of the tank.
