Default My in-laws traded a 1999 Passat 1.8T for a new A4 1.8T without a test drive.

I asked what they were looking to change versus the Passat. They said they thought the Passat was kind of slow. I held my tongue, but immediately thought that the same engine (16 more HP) in a heavier Audi (with quattro) may give them the same performance as in the lighter VW.

So, will the 2004 A4Q 1.8T be quicker than their 1999 Passat FWD 1.8T?

Default What transmissions do both cars have?

Regardless, they will probably be pretty similar. According to Edmunds, the '99 Passat 1.8T did 0-60 in 7.9 secs, which is actually a bit faster than the 1.8T quattros. If a faster car was what they were looking for, I don't think they made the best choice. Also, I don't think buying any car without a test drive is a good choice. Sounds like a bad salesperson talked them into it.

Default I will tell you straiught up, NO.

I had a 2000 fwd passat 1.8T and that thing was a rocket compared to the quattro a4 1.8T. Only chipped would the audi even compare.

I had both tiptronic in each car.

And even more, I had both at the same time for about a year, driving on to the grocery store, then later in the day, taking the audi to the mall, etc. So I wasn't feeling anything physchologocal from not having the car anymore. Both were in the same part of the country and weather and so forth

plus, its no mystery or secret that fwd is faster than quattro, goven all things else equal.

Default not only that, most dealerships have a mandatory policy that you test drive the car, even if you

just test drove the same car at a different dealer 70 miles away.

only on ebay should you really try buying a car without driving it. If you have the means to drive the car you are buying, then there is no other reason NOT to drive it. Takes friggin 20 minutes.

NOT ONLY THAT, not only did they not test drive, it seems as if they did NO OTHER RESEARCH as well, like checking out road test reports by magazines etc. Then they would have seen the numbers and concluded that they arent any better, or worse, in fact.

Default 75 year old people. More issues there. Bought it without asking me.

I could have helped them a lot. I even have a business relationship with a local Audi dealer. I could go on and on about how lame a choice this was.

Default in that case, i fault Audi, because you KNOW how old people babble, and you KNOW your in-laws

said to them they want a faster car....the dealer should have known better and advised them it wasnt faster.

I fault audi.

Economic Darwinism. We all get cheaper cars if the dim-witted get hosed.

Default Nope. My GTI was a fwd, obviously, and a Tip 1.8T. My A4 doesn't have the responsivness of my GTI...

Yet. But it is a significantly heavier car, I felt it on the test drive, but alot more solid, as I am sure you are all aware.
