My Tiptronic observations.

As an A4 ATq owner and former manual transmission driver, I feel as though I may have a valid explanation for the shift "lag" that has been discussed here regarding Audi's Tiptronic transmission.
When we shift manually, we are performing several asynchronous operations. Specifically: depressing the clutch, feathering the accelerator, shifting the gear, releasing the clutch, and then fully engaging the accelerator again. Manual drivers, we all know that this process takes but a moment, but there's no denying it does actually take time.
However, when shifting gears Tiptronically, all we do is slap the shifter or press a button and wait. I feel that it is this lack of any driver intervention that causes us to *think* that the lag is more pronounced than it actually is.
Now I'm not looking to start a religious war over manual versus Tiptronic. De gustibus non disputandum est. I'm rather sure that on any given day we can all shift faster manually than the Tiptronic system can.
However, I feel that for someone like me, who is sick of shifting but can't quite let go, that the Tiptronic is not just acceptable, but preferred.
