Default My tiptronic transmission is on crack. 5th gear @ 3000 RPM = 70km/h?! (more wierdness follows)

When I turned my car on this evening to drive home tonight, the engine hummed differently. I didn't think anything of it until I got on the highway and noticed there was like no power in the car even though it was at around 3000 RPM (I had it in D). I dropped it into tip mode and was shocked to see that it was in 5th gear and I was only doing 70km/h. Ummmm, What the?! Usually, 3rd gear @ 3000 RPM = 70 km/h!

THEN... I pressed a *little* harder on the gas pedal (NOWHERE near the downshift point), and it downshifted into 4th gear!! WHOA!! Since when does a tip transmission downshift when in tip mode and only doing 3000 RPM?!

I slipped it back into D and drove home as carefully as I could.

Is my car on crack, or is it possessed?

Default Sounds like a simple problem. Could be HW or SW, or who knows what. I would take

it in and have the dealer check for DTC's. It probably is not anything serious. Could be a bad sensor in the transmission providing bogus RPM data to the transmission, causing it to shift at the wrong times. In this case it will not appear as a DTC, which would suck. Otherwise if Audi's diagnostics are good (god I hope so) they should be able to find it right away, even if it is intermittant. Todays automatics are totally software controlled, and rely on RPM sensors and pressure sensors for feedback control. This could turn out to be very intermittant and hard to find (hope not). Baby it until you get this checked out, as this could cause more serious problems depending on what is causing it.

btw, your sig is my favorite on this board. What software did you use to create it?

Default Try rebooting. Disconnect battery for at least 10 minutes. Reconnect and see what's up. If still a

prob, see dealer ASAP. If problem goes away, mention it to dealer at leisure

Default April... won't disconnecting the battery require entering the radio code again??

Would want to find the magic number before doing this if this is true

What else will I reset by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes?
