Need help identifying faint rattling sound....
When I have the stereo off, I'm now starting to hear a faint metallic rattling noise whenever I'm doing any acceleration (more than a casual acceleration). As soon as I let up on the gas, the sound goes away.
To me, the sound seems to be coming from the front left air vent. I've had a friend drive it, and he also heard the sound. He said it sounded like it was coming from below the dash over by the driver's left knee.
I thought it might have been a case of bad gas. I normally use 93 octane gas from a local chain. I've since ran through a few tanks of Sunoco's Ultra 94, but the sound remains. I have over 54K miles on it.
Could it be clogged injectors? Could I be lucky enough to find bad gas at several stations? Is it a sign of something bad starting to happen inside the engine? Can this be quickly fixed with an additive, or would this be better left to a mechanic?
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated! =)

Use one of the tools in the link
to listen to the engine at idle and while someone revs it. That should confirm or eliminate internal troubles.<ul><li><a href="http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?L1=L1_2000&L2=L2_2050&SKU=3782 0">Get one of these.</a></li></ul>

Re: Need help identifying faint rattling sound....
I had a sound in my 2002 a4 coming from same area. It sounded metalic almost buzzing and occured under acceleration too. It also seems to be related to heat and cold. After almost 2 years, i found source on my car, it was the fuse box cover clips vibrating. When car was warm as in the summer, metal would be expanded without vibrations. When cold, it would vibrate until the interior was heated. You may want to remove your cover and see if problem goes away. I added some vaseline to the clip and the problem went away.
