Default Need oil advice

Hi all,

I have a 2003 A4 which runs the variable servicing (in europe) and my
car has been run on Castrol SLX Longlife II oil.

I have recently attempted to buy this oil to top up, and have learned
that it has been replaced with 'Castrol Edge' oil which allegedly
replaces the SLX. I was told that I should use Castrol Edge 5W-30
which, as it says on the bottle, 'replaces SLX Longlife II'. I am
unsure however for the following reasons:

Castrol SLX Longlife II is 0W-30 and the Castrol Edge replacement is
5W-30 i.e. it is a different viscosity.

My Audi Service Manual says I need to use oil which meets the
specifications VW 503 00, VW 503 01 for variable serviceing. Castrol
SLX Longlife II indeed meets this as it meets VW 503 00 / 506 00 & 506
01, however The Edge oil meets the specifications VW 504 00, 507 00
??? totally different it appears?

Incidentally, there is also a 0W-30 Edge oil which meets VW 502 00/503
01/505 00 so I would have thought I should be using this???? this does
meet the spec in my manual.

Any help/reassurance would be appreciated.

Steve

Default I'd go for the one that definitely meets the specs

As long as it's a long-life oil.

Default Castrol Edge (SLX) is the way to go. Here is a Forum just for Euro oils...

German Syntec (GC, SLX I) 0w-30 is quite popular here since Castrol brought it over. Your SLX II is a low HT/HS formulation that cannot be used on engines that have not been modified for VSI. I must say there are doubts about engine life with the low HT/HS oils. I would top it up with any (thick) HC oil and get a change to SLX I, EDGE 5w-30 or 5w-40. The new VW 504/507 oils are all 5w-40 so it looks like Audi gave up on the low HT/HS applications. Fair warning. Get some SLX I or a 5w-40 or any A3-oil. You can go 15km on an A3 oil anyway. BTW 503.01 is your spec, but it has been superceded by 504, don't worry. To summarize, I'd get some higher HT/HS oil for you next change and top up now with somthing to thicken what you have. I understand Mobil 1's most popular visc there is 5w-50, that's what I'd add. We don't get M1 5w-50 here is USA. Don't believe the hype, Audi makes mistakes with oil recommendations. SLX I is good, SLX II, is a big risk for engine life.

h ttp://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum&f=51&submit=Go</a

Many thanks for your help. I rang Audi to get their view this morning (before reading your post) and they said that the EDGE 5W-30 is what they know as 'Longlife III' and they said it should be fine so i'll top up with this.

As you say - it seems audi have given up on the 0W-30 oil - maybe to try and combat the excessive oil usage that most of us seem to encounter? My car still uses a quart every 2000 miles after 35,000 miles however runs great.
