Stick with 235/45. You don't want to offset your speedo

Default go 225/45, its only a 7.5" width rim. only slight offset to speedo

theres an online tire diameter calculater (I think on miata.net iirc) that helps you see what kind of impact changing the diameter will make on the speedo.

why would you want to go with a narrower tire?

Default Effective tire surface of a 235 on a 7.5" width rim isnt that much different then a 225

Optimal tire width for a 7.5" rim is 225, 235 is better suited for a 8" rim.

I'm guessing there's a bit more wheel protection when running a 235 tire tho.

Default depends on the tire itself, most tires these days have rim protectors built in

that would do the trick in most cases. Nothing is going to help if you really hit the curb though.
