It isn't.
When I saw the car at the test group they had a current 3-series, Audi A4, G35 Sedan, MB C-class and new 5-series all there together. The New 3-series is slightly larger than the current car, but significantly smaller than the new 5-series.

Too busy in the design. Miles away from the understated elegance of previous BMW designs...
I don't like it. Maybe it will grow on me, but it looks like they tried to adopt the design language to a mainstream car and it just looks retarded. Especially those headlights.

pontiac front end....messed up rear end...like the current design better
Looks like BMW came up with another f*cked up design. 7 series was bad, 5 series wasn't too bad, but this is over the edge.

Looks like CGI to me
The tail lights and flame surfacing are unnatural looking as well as the side mirrors are lacking signals.
Honestly, it looks more like a photoshop of the E46 with lights and etc lifted off other cars.

Before and after pics.
No matter how you slice it. The new 3-series will look like the CGIs pictured.<ul><li><a href="http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e90/5461011-1.html">Before and After Pics</a></li></ul>

That makes sense...
But I still don't know whether to be disappointed or pleased. Pleased that it doesn't resemble the E65, E60, E63, or E85 or disappointed that BMW has lost it's beauty.
I suppose I'll have to reserve judgment until I see it, but none of the new cars has grown on me since their introductions.
