New Dolphin Grey. Winter tire size

New Dolphin Grey. Winter tire size
Drove off the lot friday at 7PM, been driving since, and love it even more by the minute.
Need to decide weather to keep the 17 inch mags for winter with performance tires or put 15 inch steel rims with 195s.
We get quite a bit of snow in Mtl roads are terrible so I would hate to ruin the mags in a winter pot hole.
Any suggestions, one dealer says can't put 15s on the new A4, another says its a recommended package. What to do

I may be in the same boat and everyone has been very insistent that (i) you cannot use the existing 17" tires in the winter and (ii) you should not put winters on the 17" rims.

There is NO question that you CAN NOT use the stock 17" sport tires for winter.
Just thinking about it makes me cringe. However, you can put snow tires on the wheels. I really don't see the S4 guys having a problem putting snows on their stock 17" wheels.
Furthermore, I don't think it would be a problem putting 15" wheels on your car. 15" wheels are standard on the 1.8T. ;-)

Thanks for the info, I knew I can't use the sport tires during winter, I meant to say keep the mags and put winter 235s with low profile and 17s.
The 15s won't look very good on the car and I will still get good traction with winter 235s and quattro. Price differential is about $150.

The rule of thumb with snow tires is that you should go one size smaller (width) than stock.
So in our case we should get 225/45/17. A lot of people seem to like the Michelin Pilot Alpin. I am ordering this size and make this week.

My 02 A4 comes with 15's...
I'm in Ottawa, so I'm just gonna leave them on for the winter, and then upgrade when April/May rolls around...
I agree with you, don't keep the 17's on for the winter.

Use either 16's or 15's for winter...
Thats what I did for my 96 A4 and will do for my 02. Just make sure that the tires are sized correctly when you go down rim sizes.
As for the sports 17", they will be really bad in winter.
