I actually drove the Mazda6 sedan at the Mazda Rev-it-up driving event and I was quite impressed with the sedan. I think it is an excellent value compared to the Accord and the Camry. The interior was a bit plasticky for me and it didn't quite match up to the Passat's interior let alone the A4.
I also saw the pics on Edmunds.com about the Mazda6 wagon and I thought it is one of the best looking wagons on the market. I even called Mazda and asked them when it would be available. They said March 2004 and put me on a notify list.
Since then I got my A4 Avant and I don't think my family will ever own anything else than VAG products (Wifey drives a Jetta GLS 1.8T, dad drives a Passat 1.9PTDI 6-speed manual 4motion wagon, father-in-law has a VW Polo).
However I think the Mazda6 will be a success in its competitive class which is not entry luxury wagon. I don't think many people will cross shop the A4 Avant with the Mazda6 wagon. But I still think the Mazda6 wagon looks HOT!

my 6 built (ordered in Feb. 03 and wasn't built as of June 10 due to availability of sport package), I'd be driving a 6 sedan right now. I got tired of waiting and bought my A4 Certified Used. No regrets, although that's because I chipped my 1.8T. The V-6 version of the Mazda6 is certainly quicker than the stock 1.8T, especially the MTX version.

I test drove a Mazda 6s sedan sometime ago, the handling was pretty sharp, suspension good, interior materials look and feel cheap, although interior illumination design looks good at nite on the s model...but biggest kicker -- after taking the car around the corner and drove it for about 10 min in my usual driver manner (pretty aggressive, hard cornerings), smoke came from under the hood when brought back to the dealer. Big caution mark! You gotta remember this is a ford under the skins of mazda design. In the end, I got another A4.
