There are 2 ways to look at it though...
if I'm home the gas mileage is better but the driving distances are longer... so essentially I'm always buying gas every week and a half or so.

Yeah, longer distance and we're just fooling ourself that we don't need fuel.
But car sees more wear and tear in this regard. We either need to fuel up or replace something (like tires).
