Oettinger front center grill opening, does it need to stay clear?

Oettinger front center grill opening, does it need to stay clear?
For those who know the oettinger front(should be almost everybody here i think).
The center opening, should it stay clear at all times for maximum cooling?
Or can a license plate be put against the mesh?
I have had my license plate against it since i have the front.
But today somebody told me it might be letting through enough air.
Reason i did this is because i did not want to put holes in the bumper for the license plate.
So this was the only option.
If its better to keep it clear then i could consider a sticker license plate.
