Oil Detergent Additive???

Oil Detergent Additive???
I have a 2002 A4 1.8t and just got my oil changed(60K miles - M1 0-40). The mechanic said that next time I get my oil changed I should look into a detergent additive that you put through the system and then drain before adding the new oil. I don't think he was trying to up-sell me on anything because he said that the one they offered was a generic product and that he wouldn't use it with my car. He also said that it was very important to use a detergent that was made specifically for my car.
So here are my questions
Does this product exist?
How does it work/what does it do?
How much is it?
Where can I get it done?
Is there a specific "brand" I need?

If it has a good history, only Auto-Rx. If not, run solvent at idle 10min and drain then Auto-Rx.
Solvent = idle in old oil and drain.
ARX = leave in new oil for 2000 miles, dino prefered.
If the engine only ever saw top-grade synth, just do the ARX. If it's sludgy, 10min solvent treat first.

Thanks for your reply (more).
The mechanic said it was a bit sludgy. I've used nothing but synthetic oil since I acquired the car at 12K miles but I've been lax in changing the oil.
Can you explain the difference between the Seafoam and the Auto RX? (other than application duration)

Auto-Rx's a non-solvent natural ester also used in industrial metal cleaning where solvent's no good
If you leave solvent in the engine and drive, it thins the oil, evaporates and redeposits the sludge evenly.
