Is it just me or does the dip stick in the '02 suck!! It's so difficult to see what the oil level is with that crappy plastic...especially when the oil is clean. Anyone else feel that when checking the oil??

I was thinking it might help to modify it a bit, but I'm need to think more about how.
FYI, they couldn't make it a plain, flat, dipstick with cross hatches, like in the 1.8T, because the dipstick needs to curve a lot to reach from where it is to the oil pan.

after wiping the oil off and reinserting and removing the dipstick, I press the plastic level indicator sideways against the wiping cloth or tissue or whatever. The oil transfers to the cloth and you can see where it stops in relation to the marks on the plastic level indicator.

oil level had gone down. Reply messages explained that oil needed to seep and settle into all the nooks and crannies of the brand new engine.

things happen to it that would cause it to consume or lose oil without the driver realizing it. Scraped oil pan, something happens to drain plug/oil filter/hose/oil cooler/engine itself/etc.
And like others have noticed, some of the engines can consume a little oil during break-in.
