oil filter orientation?

oil filter orientation?
I had engine oil change a few days ago. However, the next morning, I found a pool of oil under the car.
So, I took the car to the dealership, and asked for check-up. The service advisor told me that the 1.8T engine's oil filter has inverted orientation (??, not sure if this is the word he used, but "inverted" (ie. filter opening facing down) is how I understood.), and some of the oil simply dripped down. (I think it is a really bad excuse for not doing a thorough cleaning after the oil change...)
Anyways, the inverted orientation... did I understand it correctly? Looking at the cutaway picture below, I am afraid i didn't...

Re: oil filter orientation?
I'm pretty sure its straight
Ja, they just did a bad job. Most likely is that the filter was not on tight and they didn't want to admit it. It does suck however that when you remove the filter, oil does slobber all over the crossmember.
