with much preference give to Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil, I'm now finding out that it is not approved by Audi. According to the list included in their recent extended warranty coverage for certain "oil sludge" related repairs, Mobil ! 5W-30 is not on the list, but 0W-40 is. Does this now mean that I have to change the type of oil in order to be covered under warranty? Or, if I wish to continue to use 5W-30, I need to change brands?

I read the manual before buying the motor oil. It said that the car came with 0W-40 all season motor oil but 5W-30 would be fine so I pulled the trigger. You would think synthetic oil would assist in preventing the oil sludge issue. I was told the dealers don't even use synthetic oil. *shrug*

I hope someone knows. My oil is getting changed in about 10 hours.

qualifies for VW 503.01, which is the extended drain specification. Some other oils that has this spec include GERMAN Castrol Syntec 0W-30, Motul E-tech 0W-40, etc.

If I understand it correctly, AOA has only specified VW 502.00 as required oil in the recent sludge-related notice, so check the bottle of your Mobil 1 5W-30 and see if it's there.

as for what brand, I don't know. I was ALWAYS told to use the same brand everytime you change your oil.
Because I believe oils differ dealer to dealer, that's why I bring my own oil, just to be safe.

The 1.8t MUST recieve synthetic oil and the NEW, LARGER oil filter. There was an audi service bulletin at the beginning of the summer about this.

I have been using 0w-40 since day one, however, the oil that they use (castrol syntec, I'm not sure on the weight) is both free and approved by audi.

As long as you use an audi approved oil and have service done every 10k (as per the stated service interval) you have a good case against any oil sludge issue you might have down the road. However, I'd be very surprised to see a synth car have those problems, especially with the larger filter,

Unless you are heavily modded, 5w-30 is ok, I'd add a 1/2 quart of 15w-50 though. Anyway, Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10w-30 are thin for the 30 weight range. A heavy 30 like German Syntec or 40 weight is best and they have the long-life VW 503.01 spec. IN a 3.0 there is a wide range of products that'll work, but it NEEDS the heavier oil to combat the burn-off. 5w-30 in a V6 is a no-no. Mobil 1 5w-40 SUV might be the way to go. If M1 0w-40 or 5w-40 is not available, Syntec 5w-50 is pretty easy to find and works great.

Oh, yeah. You DON'T need to meet any oil specs other than API SJ/SL/SM. If synthetic (A3 or VW 502) is required the manufacturer MUST provide it for free during the warranty period. This is why new cars get synth changes free and after warranty it's recommended. I would still BYO oil.

For a $50 oil change special we charge the following for parts.

$4.50 for each qt of oil
$.25 for drain plug seal
$8.50 or so for the 068 filter

we actually charge less for a walk in customer than we do to audi... by about 10% on parts.

we use castrol, made in belgium... I'm not sure where the local synthetic castrol is made it might be domesticated.

Dealer told me yesterday to use either Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol Syntec 5W-30.
