Oil sludge

After 4 trips to the garage, one tow and the latest experience seeing my 2002 A4 1.8T in the garage since Dec. 23, my dealer has determined the problem with my oil pressure light to be sludge.
Is this common. Is this really the problem? Why should it have taken 4 trips? Why should it have taken 3 weeks since I took it in this last time?
Supposedly, the dealer had tried everything. Supposedly, they had been in contact with Audi. Why, all of a sudden the magic answer?
Anybody else have experience with oil sludge?

In doing some research, this sounds like a fairly common problem. I have had no performance problems. But my oil pressure light comes on, and the dealer freaks out. DO NOT DRIVE IT. HAVE IT TOWED IN.
Like I said, I have had it in 4 different times. The current time, it is going on 3 weeks. Finally, yesterday, the service manager was proud of himself. We found the problem! Oil sludge.
My point is, why didn't they check for that sooner!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn't it ridiculous for it to be in the garage for 3 weeks? Should I seek any redemption from the dealer?

The sludge issue is not supposed to be widespread, and if you've had your car serviced regularly, they may not suspect sludge until other attempts have failed. That, and they may not want to admit sludge (and engine replacement), due to the cost. If it's a lower cost issue, Audi is going to point the dealer tech to other issues before it agrees to sludge.
Good Luck on the fix. Let us know how things turn out.

It's gotten kinda nasty. I think you would agree, 4 different trips to the garage is ridiculous.
The last one was in early December. They blew it off, saying nothing was wrong. Two weeks later, the oil pressure light was on again. And, it's been in the shop since Dec. 23.
Audi of America was rude. Said if the dealer could not get the light to come on, I was screwed.
Don't know if I am more pissed at AoA, or the dealer. How could it sit there for 3 weeks before their last-ditch effort is to check for oil sludge?
Fortunately, it is under warranty. How can I have any confidence in the car, after 4 trips for the same problem? It always happens on the highway, not near the dealer.

I know the dealer was right to tell me not to drive it. But, I think after 4 times, they should have taken my problem a little more seriously.

much confidence as buying a new car. The fact that they are replacing it is a good thing, I think. Just make sure you keep those service intervals and they won't try to stick you. Now with the dealership on board to fix it, you might be able to get on their good side. Your complaints have been justified by the repair. Bring them a dozen donuts next time you're there, and you have a service advisor on your side going forward.
