specific for a 3.0L. I live in the New England area and was wondering what weight oil I should run in a 3.0. I previously owned a 1.8T and ran Mobil 1 0W-40 year round. Any advice on what I should do with my new 3.0--especially during these cold winter months? TIA

In a nutshell, the lower the first number, the more fluid the oil is on a cold startup. The lower the number in the second number means how thin/thick the oil is when it's warm and thus, how resistant the oil is to breaking down under heat conditions. 0W is good for cold startups in the winter. Since our engines run fairly hot (most european engines do), 40 is a good weight oil. 30 is a bit thin and in warmer climates, 30 could actually break down.
Check your owner's manual, THAT will be your best source for oil weights.

I use German Syntec 0w-30 which is factory-fill in 1.8ts, maybe 3.0 too. One problem with M1 0w-40 is the rate it burns off. In my V6 2.8, I attain 1q/6000-8000 miles with "GC". Since it seems you are willing to get good oil and do correct service, I suggest the oil forum at Bob's. Some VERY smart people there. PhD Organic Chemists, real triboligists, even a Propulsion Engineer along with some industry people.
Use this link of another AWer' pics of his valvetrain after 110k on Syntec 5w-50 at 10k intervals. My BOSCH mechanic swears by this oil.

http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=005119</a
