I suggest u pay attention to the composition...
one pic has a branch blocking the subject, the rest have cluttered backgrounds (parked cars and such). I do like the lighting of the setting sun. Try taking several shots from varying distances while keeping the background clear of objects like poles, cars, etc...

The thing is that these pics were taken in the spur of the moment. I went to the car to get my wallet and noticed how good the car looks in the reddish sunlight. I quickly went back to the office, took the camera and just snapped some pics without much thought. Like I said before, I didn't expect them to show the car so nicely.
Usually I do try to follow the guidelines you've mentioned, I take 20-30 pics at a time and then select the best ones.
