either a leak in the vacuum hose or a bad MAF sensor. How much to replace a MAF? Could it be some other issue??

Try cleaning the MAF sensor first - clear the code and live with it for awhile see if it comes back

Simple things first, have you ruled out a vacuum leak?

Default I don't know my way around an engine very well except for easy stuff (oil, windshield washer fluid..

.etc). I did take a look and check all hoses that I could see and I did find a tear. I just don't know what hose this is so check the pics below.

Here is a pic of the entire engine, I circled the hose that has the tear in red.

Here is a close up of the hose, the tears are circled in red:

Would this be the vacuum hose?

Default Yes, that is a vacuum leak. without doubt, the cause of the DTC.

The check valve(circled) with the hole in the plastic, must be replaced, and if the hose is damaged, either cut the damaged end off the hose, or replace the hose also.

Default That is the EVAP Purge vapor hose from the carbon canister to the engine. ...

The blue solenoid to the left, is the N80 EVAP Purge regulator solenoid valve. The plastic check valve, downstream from the N80, must be replaced.

Default yeah, you have to replace that check valve. easy DIY...expensive part though

at least for what it is. IIRC, $40 at the dealer FTL

Default Thanks Jiggsy and diagnosticator1. So I would go to the parts counter and ask for a check valve?

Don't wanna go there and look too dumb asking for the wrong thing!

The hose looks fine by the way. There doesn't appear to be any cracks or leaks in the hose. If I push the valve up to the hose, I don't hear any air escaping, but of course I hear it if I'm not holding it up to the hose.

One more question. Will I need someone with vag-com to clear the code for me, or will the check engine light go away on its own?

Default I looked for the part # for you but couldnt find it

I'd take out the old one and just bring it to the parts counter. i think there may be a couple of different versions (could be wrong on that one).
