The only modification ...(more)
on my car is an addition of the roof rack.
'03 A4 1.8T QSM. 3 weeks old, over 4,000 km.

That's about the height of the multipurpose racks. (more)
My *guess* would be room for airflow over the roof the car in case you have something like the storage compartment accessory on it.
I really like the clean look of the Audi/VW rack, like the one Janus has.

Re: Why so much space between the rack and the roof? Just curious.
i have baracudas for my bike rack and they're better cos the dealer let me try out the ones u have on urs and i didn't like them cos they're noisier
