Opinions on best way to remove a surface scratch?
I tried Maguire's Scratch X and Turtle Wax Polishing Compound, then some wax. Did about 50% of the job. Is that the best I can hope for? Any other options anyone knows about besides a body shop?

This is a good site. I thought I knew all there was to know about detailing until I found this site. The forums are very informative.

http://autopia-carcare.com</a

Keep in mind that you cannot "remove" a scratch
You can only remove the paint around the scratch to make the scratch less noticable. Depending on how deep the scratch is there may be more damage done trying to remove it, and getting a paint touch up may be the best option. I would not attempt to use polishing compound to get out a scratch, and so if that did not do it for you I'd let a pro handle it.

not attempt to remove a scratch with polishing?
and why not? as long as its not too deep you have a shot at at least making it less noticeable by rounding off the edges of the scratch to rob it of light. Its really the whole point.
The PC and a good polish is used all the time. The only thing a amatuer should NEVER attempt is a rotary polisher. thats plain dangerous.

A scratch CAN be removed
by using LIGHT compounding provided you cannot feel it with your fingernail. If you can, and it is not into the primer, you can try 2000 grit sandpaper, but with either method, I would polish and finish with a Porter Cable 2424 Orbital Buffer. This will take a 2 hour job down to a 30 minute job.
