My friend's wife's 2000 Passat 2.8L didn't look much different when we replaced the VCGs @ 110k . . . . car ran nothing but 5w30 dino (specifically Chevron Supreme) for most of its life.

you should see the 5w20 that drains out of my mother's pilot every 3,750mi . . . . still looks very amber colored with a hint of dark brown.
Just because an oil is good for car "A" doesn't mean that it will perform the same for car "B". Just because you post a pic of a shiny engine, doesn't mean squat unless there are UOAs to prove the amount of protection provided.
5w50 Castrol is chock-full of VIIs . . . . and is group III. It retains it's viscosity by the oil naturally "thickening" as it gets broken down. Just not the sort of thing I'm looking for.
Either way, it seems as if Bhvrdr wants to go for a thinner oil. His selection of motul 300v and the 0w40 e-tech makes it fairly obvious that he wants a group V oil. Your Castrol which you and your "shop" love so much is neither of those.
BTW, what oil did mori switch to after he took those pics? . . . .that's right . . . . M1 0w40 . . . you'll see his reasoning for doing so too . . .

Part of the reason why 0w30 syntec doesn't lose viscosity is because of its basestock composition. I suppose viscosity loss is related to flashpoint loss as well then.

The jornals in the 1.8t are not very large. Using a thick 20-50w will not flow as well when first starting and in normal running, (unless very hot).
If your engine displacment is larger, (3 liters or more) then a consideration as oil jornals are larger.
Living in FL, I use M1 10-30w during the winter and mix 10-30 and 10-40w in the summer. This adds a little extra protection as oil thins out but stays thin enough to keep HP up.
Mixture can be 3 qts 10-30 and 2 10-40 or whatever your needs are.
Has worked for me over the years.
