I decided to go for the full protection route. I got a long sheet of 30ml magnetic silver sheeting to match the car color, and cut 4 pieces to completely cover the doors.
It works great! I keep them under my rear cargo liner and use them when i have to park in questionable places.
The stuff is thick enough to sustain any door bang, and adheres and comes off - well - like a magnet....

Unfortunately, of all the colors, the Silver and Black sheets are the only ones that match perfectly to the cars color. Also, one roll barely does 4 doors -- you have to be careful when measuring it out not to run short.
My dad thought i was crazy, then he ordered a roll for his Silver FourRunner.
