Default Pictures & writeup from SCDA track day @ NHIS yesterday... long, lots of pics.

This was definitely the perfect day to be at the track... gorgeous weather, lots of fun cars (but not too many, so not much traffic out on the track). We were running the 1.6 mile road course configuration with both chicanes, which looks like this (this is the only track map I could find online):

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/track.jpg">

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/a4wbleachers.jpg">

There were fewer cars than usual for the SCDA events- There were lots of novices, but in the upper run groups, there were maybe a dozen cars per group, which made for lots of wide open track. There were lots of Vettes, as usual, and this time around, LOTS of Porsches. There were several PCA (Porsche Club) club racers there to ring out their cars, test mods, try out new cars, etc. They had a trailer with a buffet and everything. I love PCA people- They never do anything halfway

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/pcars.jpg">

There were several new Turbos with them, including one black Turbo Cab with PCCB and a Tip (BOO) and a gorgeous silver '04 Turbo with PCCB, the factory Turbo Aero kit, and the new style lightweight wheels. Gorgeous!

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/pccb.jpg">

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/turboclose.jpg">

Also very impressive was this 962-style Diasio, which was really tearing it up out there. It had three drivers, all in different run groups- I'm told the novice had some trouble with the sequential gearbox- Not really a novice kind of car!

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/diasio.jpg">

This 540i 6-speed was VERY impressive- He had EVERY SINGLE UPGRADE that Dinan makes for the 540i except for the supercharger. He had a full suspension with camber plates, intake, exhaust, headers, stage 3 chip, etc. You'd never know from the outside, but it was REALLY fast- One of the fastest street cars there. It made this amazing maniacal gurgling noise blasting down the main straight.

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/dinan.jpg">

One of the most impressive cars there was this 355 Challenge, one of the few Challenge cars with an actual 6-speed (non-F1). It belongs to Bob Hatch, who owns Hatch &amp; Sons, an exotic car dealer in Sudbury, MA. I've seen him down at the Ferrari Club Challenge before, and he ran the car yesterday. It sounded phenomenal.

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/355.jpg">

The funniest car there was definitely this security cruiser- It belongs to the owner of Maximum Security, who usually runs a Spec Miata (painted in the company colors, with a light bar, of course). He unfortunately blew the engine in the Miata, but since he was an instructor, he had to come anyway, and he wanted some track time, so he brought this. It looked hilarious out on the track, and I'm sure it caused more than a few double-takes. He even turned the lights on a few times!

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/cop.jpg">

Also, there were these two beautiful Jag E-Types, which were moving quite quickly out there. Gorgeous cars.

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/jags.jpg">

Track conditions were great, and I was very pleased with my performance. I had a number of goals set for the day- Smoother brake release, a couple of line adjustments, and some line experimentation coming out of turn 10. I think I did pretty well with each. Last time I was up at the track, in the wet, I was running a 1:38 with ESP on. When I turned it off, that turned into a 1:36. Yesterday, I was able to trim a couple more seconds off for an average lap of 1:34, with a 1:32 in there somewhere. (Remember, this is in a ~170bhp, ~3400lb car).

Anyway, I will post some lap videos soon, hopefully tomorrow, but here are some misc. on track pics.

Here's my father, tearing it up- A nice activity for father's day. He and I both love the SCDA because there's really great instruction, especially if you're a Porsche person. There are a lot of PCA club racers who love nothing more than to talk the "Porsche Line" with a fellow Porschephile.

Here's the Diasio again.

One of the PCA guys.

The obligatory STI...

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/sti.jpg">

And of course, the Turbo.

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/turbochicane2.jpg">

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/turbohairpin.jpg">

And here are some pics I took while I was waiting to go on track.

<img src="http://people.brandeis.edu/~tsle/trackday4/sideclose.jpg">

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed these pics, and I hope I tempted some of you to hit the track this season. If you're in New England, come join the SCDA at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock or NHIS. The prices are great and the instruction is quality. www.scda1.com.

In-car videos soon!
