They can be changed without removing the headlight assemblies, at least on my 3.0. I had read to remove the headlights in another post, but that is way more trouble than it is worth as the fastening screws inside the engine bay are next to impossible to get to.

The only important tip is to remove the plug from the light bulb before undoing the bulb retaining clip. If you don't do this, the only way to get the bulb out is to remove the retaining clip completely, and that is a PITA. I can't believe I failed to figure this out when I did the first bulb, but you live and learn!
