question about 18' wheels, avant and chains
I have a 2002 avant with 18x8 wheels and sports suspension and live in SF Bay Area. I understand that the CHP sometimes requires chains in the mountains.
What kind if type of chains will fit and clear the wheel well and do I just need one set on the front?

as far as I know...
for a quattro you'll need it on all 4 wheels. If not, when you're in the snow the ESP system will keep kicking in because your front treads wont grip while your rear will grip.

The manual says only the fronts, at least on my '02 manual it does
Definitely don't want chains on 17" wheels, let alone 18", unless you really want your rims' finish destroyed.

Re: question about 18' wheels, avant and chains
You guys are going to hurt yourselves or at least your cars. CHP requires four wheel drives with snow tires to carry chains, not put them on.
You cannot put chains on a B6- only cables becuase
of clearance issues, not rim damage.Only put them on the front because that is the main drive axle on the quattro system. Do yourself a favor and take your stock 16"wheels in your garage and buy a set of dunlop winter sport 3's or blizzacks and save your fancy wheels for summertime posing. The car was made for the snow.keep a set of chains in the trunk,CHP will never make you put them on
