Default question about oil.

just bought the 2003 a4 3.0 quattro. my salesperson tells me that i should put a quart of oil every month for the car.

is this true? never of this before. i've owned a honda and lexus in the past...and this was never the case.

does the car lose that much oil where i need to fill it with a quart of oil every month? seems excessive.

please let me know. thanks.

Default Check oil often, like every time you fill up, if the oil is low, top it off. Dont just put in a

quart every month. Enjoy the car!

Default Not true! Yes, your engine will use some oil during break in...

but most owners here have used less than 1 quart in the 1st, 5K miles and then very little to the 1st, 10K service.

Default Your salesperson is full of bull! I haven't had to add any oil in 22K miles of driving.

And I went 10K miles between my last two oil changes.

And remember, too much oil can be just as bad for your engine as too little.

If you do need to add oil, the Mobil 0W-40 SuperSyn that you can buy from AutoZone will meet your car's needs.

Default Your car is also equipped with a low oil warning indicator.

It's a safe oil level zone if this warning comes on. Just top off with oil.

Default Correct. Check your oil after a few fill-ups

I check mine about once every 3 fill-ups. Also, since I have a turbo, I notice that I burn a lot of oil going on a long uphill on a highway. Otherwise, I don't burn very much oil.

But DON'T put a quart of oil every month. That is a silly thing for a sales guy to say. You should post that on the "Fables your sales rep told you" thread. I think he meant CHECK you oil every month.

Default Re: question about oil.

What is all this talk about oil change intervals?
I might be a little slow here but in Europe all '03 Audis come with a variable service interval. As long as you use the Special Castrol oil (meets VW 506.0 for petrol or VW 506.1 spec for diesel)Then the car computes the oil change interval. There is a countdown indicator on the dashboard to let you know how you are doing. Don't you have this in North America?

Default Nope. We are fixed at 10k or 1 year...

I could figure out why they needed a computer to calculate that figure, until I read about the variable service interval used elsewhere.
