depends on if you have bose
the stock system is a piece of shyat. it's the first thing that's going on my car - after i put in speakers, i'm putting in some subs.
personally, i would rather have nice quality music w/ a fair amount of bass over crappy quality music w/ a ton of bass. imho.

Re: depends on if you have bose
go w/ the speakers! my recommendation:
get some NICE front speakers like focal polykevlars or infinity perfects powered by a nice 4-channel sub. use only two of the channels two power your front speakers, and use the other two to power your sub(s). this is good if you feel uncomfortable dishing out a lot of money at the same time to a car audio shop (i.e. $4000). a pair of good front component speakers will provide more than enough bass for you - not everyone on your block will hear you, but still, it'll bump.
but if you have the cash, do everything.

One you put a sub in you will notice the factory speakers cant keep up.
The overall volume that the stock system can play is not enough even for the smallest of sub.
Without changing the speakers or at least adding an amp for them the system will sound very unbalanced. Bass will probably be too boomy and unnatural at low volumes and may only sound "OK" at moderately high levels.
I just went thru this exact thing. I added a multichannel amp to drive the front speakers and 2 10 subs and it sounded "ok". The bass was nice and tight but overall it was very unbalanced.
Problem with adding an amp for the stock speakers is they really are not designed to take much power and you may fry a voice coil after just a few weeks like I just did
