Both toluene and xylene carry the same warning from OSHA:
"Special precautions: (Toluene/Xylene) attacks some coatings and some forms of plastic and rubber."
Since gasoline already contains toluene and/or xylene, auto manufacturers doesn't put coatings, plastics, or rubber which are known to be attacked by toluene/xylene anywhere in your car where it would be expected to come into contact with the fuel. ;o)

So it's safe. The only precaution I make is that I don't try to pour it directly into the tank (with a funnel). The metal cans are sloppy when you pour them, I wouldn't want to risk getting Toluene on the paint. I pour it into a 5 gallon gas can then top it off with 4 gallons of gas. This does two things, it kind of dilutes/mixes the Toluene and since the gas can has a spout, it's much easier to pour into the tank.
