Default QUESTION: Deep circular grooves in brake discs - unsafe? (not my car - don't worry)...

I went w/a friend of mine to fill up his tires w/air the other day ('93 Taurus), and I noticed that his front brake discs had deep circular grooves dug into them (probably about 1 cm wide and several mm deep). This, I am sure, is not normal (and I'm guessing not safe either). I told him he needs to get this checked out ASAP, but what specifically should I tell him is the problem?

Default My guess: could be that the pads were worn down then it went metal to metal.

I'd bring it in asap.

Default I dunno.. grooves don't necessarily mean the rotors are shot.

Just means there is odd wear. When you brake hard, are the brakes chattering? If so, then yes replace the rotors (or at least get them turned.) But if they doesn't appear to be any loss of braking power, then you are probably fine.

Default It looks like someone took a dremel to the rotors.

They're not smooth like mine; they have a deep groove.

Default yes, but I'm saying that aren't necessarily bad.

Unless there's a serious problem such as loss of braking power or chatting, I would think its fine.

Assuming there's no mechanical problems with the brakes, I would just wait until it was time to get new brake pads and just get the new rotors at the same time. The best time to change rotors is when you are changing pads and flushing the brakes.
